Fostering agricultural cooperation with Ibaraki, Japan

Vietnam hopes to cooperate with Japanese businesses to improve the quality of the processing industry and agricultural products for exports.
At the talks with Masaru Hashimoto, Ibaraki prefecture Governor, in Hanoi on October 6, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat emphasised that with advantages in land, resources and climate, agriculture plays the key role in Vietnam’s economy, contributing to 20% of the country’s GDP. However, Vietnam is facing big challenges in enhancing competitiveness of farm produce for exports.

Phat said Vietnam wants to obtain more experience in management, processing technology and building supply chains for the world market from Ibaraki prefecture.

Currently, Vietnam’s agricultural production can meet domestic demand and is orienting to export.
He hoped that the two sides will focus on science and technology cooperation and application of advanced technologies in agricultural production, bio-technology, processing and post-harvest preservation. They will coordinate to improve the chain value of food production, harvest, processing, preservation, and distribution and boosting direct investment in agriculture.

Meanwhile, Hashimoto said currently Japan is also confronting challenges in agricultural labour force and consumption market. So, it concentrates on safe and high-quality agricultural production towards a profitable agriculture to attract young people to the industry.

He stressed that Ibaraki can cooperate with Vietnam in many fields, first of all, training.

During their stay in Vietnam, the Ibaraki delegation will visit Nam Dinh and Dong Thap provinces.
