Thai billionaire seeks controlling interest in Vinamilk

(VOV) -Fraser & Neave Dairy Investments Pte Ltd, owned by Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, has tendered an offer to acquire an additional 15 million shares of Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk).

The offer comes on the heels of the recent deal by German retailer Metro AG to sell Metro Cash& Carry Vietnam to Beri Jucker (BJC) for US$879 million, which is also owned by Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi.

Fraser & Neave Dairy Investments Pte Ltd plans to purchase Vinamilk shares from August 15 to September 13 to become the largest foreign stockholder of Vinamilk, which is coded VNM on the local stock market.

The Thai investor currently has more than 79.5 million VNM shares, occupying 9.85% of the Vietnamese company’s charter capital. With the latest deal, the Thai firm will hold 11.04% of VNM’s charter capital, equivalent to 110.4 million shares.

Fraser & Neave Dairy Investments Pte Ltd is listed on Singapore’s stock market, with a focus on food and beverage.

Born in 1944, Chinese-origin billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi has his name in Forbes’ June ratings as the third richest in Thailand with a total asset estimated at US$11.3 billion.
